Rank Names

I would like to change the current default rank names to something a bit more unique to our guild. Please post suggestions here then we’ll take a vote on which set we’ll use.

Rank info:
9 Possible Ranks
1 “Leader” – officer promotion, guild invite & removal, MotD edit, rank name edit
1 “Officer” – member promotion, guild invite & removal, MotD edit
7 Member categories – I am unaware of any privileges that can be given to these ranks

If you can, try to give reasons why someone would achieve a certain rank.

  1. Could possibly go with a military ranking system such as:

    General – Guild Leader
    Colonel – Officers

Still thinking through the reasons for each rank. If you have suggestions, please comment.

  2. Vylance Invictus Says:

It has occured to me that the overwhelming percentage of guids use a ‘military’ style to thier guild ranks. I have actually thought of this before and thought it would be both interesting and somewhat unique to use a more ‘religious’ approach such as:
**leader – (2 ways to go here) Servant (becuase a guild leader really does serve, its a thankless tedious job) or Justicator or something like that.
**officers – High Chaplain (chaplains that have heeded the call of the guild – serves the guild and leader in all matters they can)
    **Curator (guild bank characters)
**Chaplain (proven, helpful, selfless, knowledgable, willing to become officer should it be needed of them, and willing to wait untill it is)
    **Dedicate (proven, helpful, selfless)
**Acolyte (proven themselves – doesnt beg, helps ppl etc)
**Initiate (after probation if they are staying)
**Convert (all new members – 7 day probationary trial period)
***and MIA is fine for those that have been missing for a month or more – and at 2 months the boot? or perhaps Eunich?

  3. Vylance Invictus Says:

OR a Noble family type of thing?
lets see how that would pan out:
Viscount – leader (or whatever Romulus likes)
    Knight – officer
    Exchequer – bank
    Chancellor – highest member
    Squire – lowest member
Peasant – new member 7 day probationary period

I dunno these are just ideas.

  4. Ancient Greek Court Ranks

Basileus (Βασιλεύς) — the Greek word for “sovereign”
Strategos – a military commander, often translated “general” or “admiral”
    Hypatos – usually translated consul
Tourmarches – the commander of a tourma, a military unit
Protospatharios – a senior officer in the imperial guard
Stratopedarches (Master of the Camp) – a commander of the army in the field
Archegetes – commander of all infantry in a large army
Kentarchos – commanders of a smaller division of the army in the field
Taxiarches – commander of an infantry division in the army

  5. Kind of a bland suggestion off another guild site.

    Rank0: Royal
    Rank1: Royal Advisor
    Rank2: Advisor
    Rank3: Knight Commander
    Rank4: Knight
    Rank5: Squire
    Rank6: Recruit

  6. Greek Mythology

  7. Jabarie Says:

I kinda like the first military ranking suggestion. However, I don’t like the vague terms of “proving yourself” to obtain rank, that leaves to much to whim. I feel that after a 30 day probatation period, rank should be obtain by level, adventure, crafting or diplomacy; whichever is highest.

  8. vylance Says:

Very good point Jaberie. Perhaps we could modify the titles by what your toon does most. For instance:
    1) High Command Romulus
    2) Advisor (officers)
    3) Exchequer (bank – I do think we need a guild bank toon and
will keep putting in a title for one 🙂 )
    4) Knight Errant (high adventurer, say 30+?)
    5) Master (high crastmen – not enough ranks to seperate the
types and ‘master’ is a medieval title for a skilled person)
    6) Orator (diplomat)
    7) Legionnaire (lower adventurers)
    8) Novice (lower lvl craftsmen)
    9) Recruit (new member rank for probationary period)
I know I didn’t use the military ones…as stated above they’re not my favorite 🙂

  9. I like these suggestions. I prefer medieval or mythology type ranks myself. I have a few questions.

    1. I do think we need to promote those who decide to craft or participate in diplomacy more than adventure, but how do you distinguish between them. Most people are not just leveling one area. If you separate ranks into the 3 areas, then which do you rank them by?

    2. How long is a good probationary period for recruits? 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month?

    3. What would institute a promotion? For me, I would prefer it include some leveling and some active participation in the guild. I do not think you should rank up only because of level.

My mind just went blank. I had a couple more, but it’s been a long day. 🙂 I’ll post again if I remember.

  10. Just putting my little opinion in before things become final. In leading other guilds I always liked to make an immersion factor, i.e. rank names should reflect some kind of theme to the guild. Where the military model does make a lot of sense and easily recognised by just about anyone, especially with those with RL military experience, I am making the following suggestions in line with the “justice” theme that the guild name implies:

    Rank0: The Law
    Rank1: Law Giver
    Rank2: Regent
    Rank3: Sanctioner
    Rank4: Adherent
    Rank5: Proclaimer
    Rank6: Probate

RE: Rank promotions. No matter what is chosen there will be issues to be dealt with. What I did see explain in guild chat was that “we all participate in these, but some always stand above the rest.” Where that is vague, it’s the very best answer, and easy to vote upon by a group of elders. More or less, the more you are openly participating and contributing your likelyhood of promotion increase, and that makes the most sense to me. This would not have to distinguish between playstyle choice: adv, craft, diplo – as anyone no matter what level can always participate and give advice.

RE: Probabates. Generally bad apples are fairly easy to spot, most of which become fleshed out in a week’s time. Two weeks may perhaps be a bit more than most folks would want to wait, but it also makes sense.

  11. Abunadh Says:

I like Vylance’s religious style rank names, so I’ll second those, but I like anything that isn’t goofy. I do think that “members” shouldn’t be called “initiates” so think of something else.

On the other hand, the guild is called Wings of Justice, not Wings of Religion, so maybe something more along the justice theme would be better? I’ll noodle it over.

Romulus: I agree, character level shouldn’t necessarily be a primary factor in consideration for guild status. I don’t think you need to set up different rank structures for the different spheres – as this will likely be problematic as you’ll have those who engage in two or more spheres, but can only have one rank.

Probationary period should be two weeks, or even a month. One week is too short.

Promotions should be based on dedication and participation. It should really just be up to the feelings of you and the officers and not necessarily any automatic criterea. There are two guild members who I have on /ignore for general immature behavior – you guys may feel compelled to leave people like this in the guild, but you don’t have to promote them.

  12. Vylance Says:

Could you do me a favor and e-mail me the names of any guildmates you may have on ignore and a brief explanation as to why you have them there?
This would be so that we can keep an eye on any …problimatic behavior that might be going on.
    Thank you very much.

  13. Vylance Says:

😛 and just so you don’t have to go hunting it down (though it is here somehwere) my e-mail is:

  14. If you have an issue with someone in the guild, please contact an officer. We don’t always catch the problematic behavior because 1) we’re not on 24/7, 2) we miss chat because we’re busy, 3) the behavior is not in guild chat…

Finny, Nikle, Vylance and myself have all posted our emails and you’re welcome to contact us through that or in game. We’d like to either reprimand or remove any problem as soon as possible.

  15. Montanis Says:

What I found out from being a guild leader on various games both casual and also hardcore is that the ranks in the end split between two categories those that are officers and those that members.

With that said the ranks should be more based on level or achievement like listed above. An example is say those that are level 1-20 are x rank, those that are 21-40 are y and those that are 41-50 are z. This would not include the officers who would have their own classification. If you try to base it on say gear, time, or something then it can get quite cumbersome. Though an initiate rank is good regardless of level to prove themselves. I’m not sure on how the leveling works for say crafting or diplomacy but if you can include them in the same categories it would save time trying to create more ranks.

For officers are you guys thinking of doing class leaders or in this case say with so many classes breaking it into the four main subcategories, protective fighters, offensive fighters, arcane casters, and healers so that you can still have that person to come to if questions but doesn’t require having 16 people especially if raid sizes are 12 it will make it easier in the end I think.

Overall I’m not sure on the final direction you guys want the guild to follow is it more of a casual feel or more of a hardcore or do you think somewhere between?

Reading the latest notes it seems like the first raid zone is going to be 12 person with future ones up to 24 people. I think this is a great idea from SOE with the size, though there will not be any instances, we will have to think of how we want to compete with the other guilds when we get up to that level.

Anyways I just thought I should let you guys know where I’m from and stand. In the end I wouldn’t mind help you guys as an officer, but my time is not as consistent as it once was with my 2 year old son now, but I can help regardless of what rank or such as in the end when you get to know people the ranks are not as important.
